Colors can be a very important marketing tool.  Certain colors are known to create certain reactions or thoughts in the mind.  Colors can also be an important selling tool, catching the eye and getting people to notice something they normally would have ignored.  That’s why its important to know the website colors you want when you create your site.

Certain colors can also create a mood.  Red is known for anger, black for depression, yellow for happiness and so on.  Many of these moods come from previous experiences that the beholder has had, pairing a certain memory, feeling, or experience with a color.  There are many feelings and interpretations for each color, but there are a few prominent meanings that you can use to design your website.

There are different classes of colors, such as neutral, warm, and cool.  When thinking of your website colors, try to use colors that are similar and go well together.  The neutral colors consist of whites, grays, and blacks.  White gives a feeling of cleanliness and purity, while grays symbolize vagueness and uncertainty.  Black is a classy color that can show wealth and sophistication, but also represents death. Warm colors consist of reds, oranges, yellows, and browns.  Red can be seen as blood and violence, something you may not want people to associate with your site.  Yellows and oranges show happiness while browns give an earthy, organic feeling.  Cool colors are most commonly blue, but are also green and purple.  Blue gives off a cool or relaxed feeling while green symbolizes jealousy as well as wealth.  Purple is associated with royalty.

When you create a website you should be mindful of the colors you want to use and what perception they might give the visitors of your site.  Website colors should go well together, something that is easy on the eye and doesn’t create confusion.  Too many colors, or colors of opposite ends of the spectrum, can look messy and make your site undesirable.  Website colors can mean many things however, and it is impossible to always convey the exact feeling you want.  This is because everyone interprets colors in their own way, and you have no control over what they perceive.

When you do decide which colors to use for your website, make sure that they emit the feeling and message that you want your sites visitors to receive.  Ask your friends and family to preview your site and tell you what they think of the color scheme and how it makes them feel.  Website colors can be more important than you know, so take your time and choose the ones that are right for you.
