Fixed width layouts versus liquid layouts
So in the fixed width layouts versus liquid layouts debate everyone has the pros and cons to go with both sides. But before I get into the debate between fixed and liquid one thing just needs to be made known. When it comes to websites a lot of designers and producers forget the most important thing, getting the important information across to the viewers. When creating your website use the layout that best suits your needs to get the critical information out to as many people as possible.
Many websites are becoming super elaborate and decorative but this can distract from the main message of the webpage. Viewers only care about getting the information that they’re looking for in a simple manner and doing so quickly. Websites don’t need all the ins and outs and fancy gadgets that just end up making the whole process slower. But as you’re deciding and creating your website initially it is important to first decide on the type of layout you will use whether a fixed width or a liquid layout.
Here’s just a few of the pros and cons of the fixed width layout and then the liquid layout.
Pros of the fixed width layout
- The main content area is tightly controlled without having to set a minimum or maximum width
- It is easy to create a clean looking website – keep it simple
- Some visual designs can only be achieved with a fixed width layout
- It is easier to control ad units.
Cons of the fixed width layout
- People with small monitors will end up having a scroll bar on 760 pixel fixed site
- Because it is more simple it’s more boring
- It can limit the number of columns and content/limited space
- A 760 pixel fixed width site can look narrow on a large screen
Pros of the liquid layout
- Can adapt to any port width – accessible for many internet devices
- Fluid widths match browser default layout method.
- Makes the most of available screen real estate/not wasted space
- More flexibility
Cons of Liquid Layout
- With the use of space and can confuse the viewers and make site overly congested
- May not be used by older versions of web browsers
- Susceptible to breaking at odd resolutions and 800 x 600.
These are just a few of the pros and cons in the fixed width layout versus liquid layouts. But just remember the most important part is making your website easily navigated, simple, and conveying the message.
